TENMAT – Upton Primary School
Heating & Hot Water Decarbonisation Scheme
Air Source Heat Pumps | Off-Site Prefabrication | 120+ Radiators | 20 Fan Convector Units | BMS Controls | Six-Week Delivery
The Project
North West Renewables Ltd was appointed to deliver a major heating and domestic hot water decarbonisation scheme at Upton Primary School, replacing the existing heating infrastructure with a modern, low-carbon system centred around air source heat pump technology.
The project required the complete strip-out of the existing heating system, installation of new heating and domestic hot water plant, replacement of heat emitters throughout the school and the introduction of new BMS controls.
With the works taking place during the school holiday period, the entire project had to be completed, commissioned and handed over within just six weeks, ready for the school to reopen.
The Challenge
The principal challenge was programme.
A substantial mechanical installation needed to be removed and replaced within a fixed six-week window, with no opportunity for the completion date to move beyond the start of the new school term.
The scope included more than 120 radiators, 20 fan convector units, new heating distribution, domestic hot water services, new low-carbon plant and BMS controls, as well as flushing, insulation and commissioning.
Delivering this volume of work required careful planning, coordination and the ability to carry out several elements of the project simultaneously.
Our Solution
NWR developed a coordinated installation programme that combined on-site works with off-site prefabrication.
While our site teams stripped out the existing installation and began the new heating distribution works, the new plant room was being prefabricated at our dedicated fabrication facility.
This allowed two major elements of the project to progress concurrently rather than carrying out the entire plant room fabrication on site.
Prefabrication also provided a controlled working environment, allowing assemblies to be produced efficiently and to a consistently high standard before being transported to the school for installation.
Once delivered, the prefabricated plant was positioned and connected into the newly installed heating and domestic hot water systems.
